PODCAST!

Don't forget to follow Washburn on FB!
But there are a lot of things you need to watch out for while maintaining a FB account both personally and in the professional world (as we discussed in Mass Media Bootcamp).

Check out this podcast I created about the negative side effects of FB!

UMAPS

WASHBURN ROCKS!

I LOVE WASHBURN!

WU RESIDENTIAL LIVING

An interview with Mindy Rendon and Kate McCown on Washburn Residential Living

At the WU Residential Living office you can visit about housing options and choose from five of the residential facilities that are available: Living and Learning Center, The Village, West & Kuehne Halls, and The Phi Delta Theta house. Speaking from experience, I would definitely recommend living on campus to all current and future Washburn students as it is a very fulfilling experience and has so many benefits.

MABEE LIBRARY

Mabee Library is the official library of Washburn University. Here you can find books, articles and databases, choose from three different study floors, ask librarians questions, ask about inter library loans, check in/out books and videos, check in/out laptops, use printers/copy machines and so much more...
Center for Student Success is also located here which includes academic advising, WU first-year experience, and tutoring on various subjects.

Check out : http://www.washburn.edu/mabee/ for additional information

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS

You can visit WU International Programs if you would like to talk to someone about studying abroad! You can also get involved by joining the International Club and its activities to get a chance to meet many international students from all over the World like myself :-)

More information at: http://www.washburn.edu/academics/international-programs/index.html

This is a very cool page you should visit (It includes interviews with some of the WU international students on what they think about Washburn) :

BENNETT COMPUTER CENTER

This is where you will find Information Technology Services from online education support to MyWashburn& Email info and technology support. I have been to Bennett Computer Center many times in order to get MyWashburn password reset due to multiple wrong password entries. I had also taken my laptops over there whenever I needed assistance with anti-virus protection. If your laptop is having problems of any kind, don't hesitate to take it there because they do everything they can to help free-of-charge (with your current WU ID ofcourse!)

THE MEMORIAL UNION

Washburn’s Memorial Union includes the cafeteria, book store, student media, WSGA, iCard student center, LLC dorms, conference rooms, Wu catering, and WU A&B ball room. I personally go to the Memorial Union to relax in between and after classes, sometimes play pool at the lower level and go to work (I work for WU catering) I also used to live in LLC and it was quite enjoyable and convenient in winter time since the cafeteria is connected to it and I don't have to go outside to get food.

WU BOOK STORE/ ICHABOD SHOP

We can't forget about the WU Book Store! At the Ichabod Shop you can:
  • Buy & sell books back
  • Get all other school supplies
  • Buy WU clothing
  • Graduation gown/caps
  • Buy WU Jewelry & other WU souvenirs

STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES

Washburn Student Health Services is open to all current WU students, free of charge with a valid WU ID. You don't need to make an appointment unless you need to have exams/lab work etc. done. The last walk-in appointment is accepted 30 minutes before closing. The clinic is closed over most holiday breaks but they can refer you to other urgent care centers in Topeka. There's a fee for some of the services offered such as TB Testing and other immunizations.
I have been to the health clinic endless times and they have always taken good care of me. They also make sure to prescribe the generic kind of medications to cut down the cost on students (i.e. $4 antibiotics)
WU Health Services also offer a Student Health Insurance plan which is optional (it was mandatory for me since I am an international student) but recommended.
For more information please go to:  http://www.washburn.edu/current-students/services/health-services/

Location: Morgan Hall Room 170

WU ATHLETICS

Though Washburn Athletics is not a student service, sports are an important part of the Washburn experience. Each student reserves the right to go to sporting events, as it is paid for in your tuition. The school has many different teams that compete every year. In 2009, The renovation of Whiting Fieldhouse was complete. The new renovation returned the building to a top notch training facility. These changes have lead to athletes becoming faster and stronger, making Washburn more competitive and therefore more attractive to future prospects. With the school being a more desirable place to come play, it will help the school win more championships and expand in size. Participating in sports on and off the field is important at any campus. Sports bring opportunities for students to not only give scholarships to those talented athletes, but also give release to stressed students who just like to watch sports.

STUDENT RECREATION CENTER

Washburn University has made a huge effort to help students “get fit”. In 2004 Washburn opened a new Wellness center for the students to use. The 37,000 square foot Student Recreation Center contains a gymnasium, fitness loft, indoor track, meeting room, rock climbing wall, wellness suite, and a multi-purpose room. They also offer classes where you can exercise in groups with a trained athlete. This facility offers excellent opportunities for the veteran athlete and even the students who consider themselves to be unfit.

iCARD SERVICE CENTER

This is where all the WU students get their official Washburn student photo ID card from. It has your Washburn Identification Number (WIN) and photo on it. You need this card to be able to open doors (if you are living on campus), enter the athletic events, the Student Recreation Center and WU pool for free and get discounts at various places in Topeka. You also have the option to load money into your ID card and use it at different locations across campus such as the Union Market, Mabee Library, the book store etc...

Just remember~ if you lose your card, it's $10 to get a new one!

CENTER FOR STUDENT SUCCESS & TUTORING

Washburn offers an abundance of extra opportunities for students to get help with their studies with such advantages as a writing center, academic testing, or even academic advising. Washburn really makes the steps for success. Located at Washburn’s Maybee Library the Center for Student Success helps students reach their goals. It has been proven on campuses across the United States that these types of centers are a crucial factor in the success for students. Since students learn at different paces, the center gives more attention to areas that you personally need. Tutoring is just one of the features that is included in the student success center. They also have helpful resource links, academic workshops, and referrals to other campuses (such as inter library loans).

PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES CLINIC

Psychological Services Clinic at Washburn is one of the greatest services I have had a personal experience with. The difference between the Counseling Services and the Psychology Clinic is the fact that at the Psychology Clinic, we get help from Washburn Psychology students who are working on their Master's Degrees under the supervision of their professors. It also costs $5 for each session but it is totally worth it!

Couple semesters ago, I started going to the clinic due to depression and anxiety and found it to be very helpful. The first few sessions, I had to take a bunch of tests and I got feedback according to the results, then we took it from there. I should have continued to go but I stopped in the middle because I got too busy with life! I definitely encourage all the students to take advantage of the Psychology Clinic at Washburn.

P.s. I have also heard positive feedback from a couple of my friends who had visited the clinic for depression and anxiety.

Here is the official link to their website: http://www.washburn.edu/about/community/psychological-clinic/

CAREER SERVICES

Career services at Washburn is here to help us students find jobs. They also offer various career testings for those students who are struggling to declare their major. These tests determine which field a student is suitable for considering their interests, personal and professional skills etc. I have taken the test twice in the past and finally decided to declare my major in Mass Media! :-)
